Establishing a Good Contact Lens Fit at Petrolia Optometry

It all starts with a thorough eye exam to ensure the most up-to-date eyeglass prescription and rule out any pre-existing conditions that could interfere with contact lens wear. If it has been more than two years since your last eye exam (one year for patients under 20 years old) you will be required to undergo a full eye exam before starting the contact lens fitting process.

The Contact Lens Fit and Teach
If you have never worn contact lenses before, you will be required to undergo a “Contact Lens Fit and Teach”. This is a special appointment during which you will be taught the basics of safe contact lens wear. This includes a lesson with one of the optometric assistants on contact lens insertion, removal, cleaning and troubleshooting problems. Once you have demonstrated that you are able to insert and remove contact lenses on your own you will be sent home with your trial contact lenses.

Try Before You Buy At Petrolia Optometry you are always allowed to try contact lenses before you purchase them. During a Fit and Teach or Refit appointment your doctor will select contact lens trials for you based on your exam information and your lifestyle needs. Trial contact lenses are always provided at no charge to the patient. This process allows you, the patient, to be sure that you are purchasing contact lenses that best suit the needs of your daily activities, that they are comfortable and provide crisp, clear vision. You will be sure because you got to “test drive” them before you buy them!

Follow Up Appointments Contact lens follow-up appointments are scheduled 1-2 weeks after an initial fitting or refit. You will be required to arrive at your contact lens appointment with your contact lens trials in your eyes (for at least two hours prior to your exam). Your doctor will consult with you about your experience with the trials, and check the fit and the prescription of the contact lenses to make sure that the best possible result. Once the perfect contact lens prescription has been determined, you will be able to order your lenses.

Please be aware that Petrolia Optometry will only dispense contact lenses with a valid contact lens prescription and prescriptions expire every two years. This is to ensure that every patient has the best and safest contact lens experience possible and to comply with all provincial health care regulations.
