Tips for a Smooth Eye Exam

Preparing for your eye exam can be daunting. Follow these helpful tips to ensure a smooth and comprehensive experience:

What to Bring with You:

  • Your valid OHIP card: Even if you think OHIP won't cover your exam, bring your card. We'll need a valid card to bill OHIP during your exam.
  • Eyewear: Bring any prescription glasses, non-prescription readers, or sunglasses you use.
  • Eye Drops: If you use eye drops regularly, bring them with you.
  • Medication List: Have an up-to-date list of your medications, including over-the-counter ones.
  • Accompaniment: Bring a driver if you prefer not to drive after dilation. Adults 20 years and older might require pupil dilation during the exam.
  • Driver's License: We'll need to confirm your driver's license class and restrictions, if any apply.
  • Computer/Music Glasses: Measure the distance between your eyes and the screen or instrument if you need specialized glasses.
  • Laser Procedure Follow-Up: If you're visiting after a laser procedure, bring the procedure card from your referring doctor.
  • Patient Registration Form: Complete the patient registration form ahead of time for a quicker process.

For Contact Lens Wearers:

  • Contact Lens Packaging: If you're a new patient and wear contacts, bring the packaging with brand, power, and base curve.
  • Wear Contacts: Ideally, have your lenses in for at least 2 hours before the exam. If you run out, we can provide trial lenses.
  • Contact Lens Case and Solution: Bring these along, and remember a pair of glasses should you need them.
  • "Fit and Teach" Appointment: If you have one, ensure your fingernails are short and smooth.
