Q&A with Dr. Jessica St. Pierre Street
Dr. St. Pierre Street Answers Your Eyecare Questions
My eyelid keeps twitching. Is this serious?
An eye twitch is also known as myokymia. It is an involuntary spasm in the muscle in the eye lid. It is annoying; not only because you can feel it, but also because you can see it as well. Factors that can contribute to this spasm are: stress, caffeine (a muscle stimulant), fatigue and squinting. Things that you can do to try to relieve the spasm are: more sleep, less stress (easier said than done!), more calcium (a muscle relaxer) and less eye strain. So drink more milk and less coffee! Myokymia is only a concern if the spasm affects more than just the eye lid muscle (orbicularis oculi), for example, if it affected part of your face or neck as well.
